In my psych class today we were discussing thinking, language, and intelligence. My favorite little factoid to come out of the lesson was this: for the first 10 months of life, babies will make all the sounds for speech used around the world during their "babbling." After ten months, the babbling sounds will narrow to the sounds used in language(s) spoken in the home. Children who were thus exposed as infants to multiple languages beyond the primary tend to pick up those other languages faster than children who did not have that exposure when attempting to learn the additional.
